How Merbau Ages With Character
Day 1. Day 7,300. Twenty years apart.
The first photograph shows our Merbau Lindaman Folding Chair when new. The second was shared by one of our customers, a resort in Cambodia, after approximately 20 years of outdoor use.
The difference is striking.
When new, Merbau typically shows warm brown to reddish-brown tones. Over many years of exterior exposure, its surface can weather into softer brown, grey and silver-grey shades.
The timber no longer looks new, but it can develop a deeper sense of character, history and presence.
From Colour to Character
Exposure to sunlight, rain, humidity and the surrounding environment gradually changes the surface appearance of exterior Merbau.
Its richer original colour can become more subdued, while the grain, texture and natural variation become increasingly visible. This creates a weathered patina that gives aged timber a very different appearance from freshly finished wood.
Surface weathering does not automatically mean that the timber has failed. Long-term performance still depends on factors such as timber quality, installation, drainage, ventilation, exposure and maintenance.
In the right application, ageing becomes part of the material's character.
A Material That Can Mature Well
One of Merbau's appealing qualities is that it does not need to remain visually unchanged to continue looking attractive.
Over time, the timber can move from a fresh, refined appearance to something more established and distinctive. Instead of simply looking old, well-cared-for timber can develop a sense of depth and history that new material cannot immediately reproduce.
The same principle extends beyond furniture. Merbau can develop this character in applications such as:
- Decking
- Exterior cladding
- Screens
- Fencing
- Outdoor furniture
- Other suitable exterior timber applications
Good Ageing Still Requires Good Care
Natural ageing should not be confused with neglect.
Even durable timber such as Merbau needs appropriate care if you want it to perform well over the long term.
Good maintenance begins with proper design and installation. Exterior timber should have adequate drainage and ventilation so that water does not remain trapped around the wood.
Regular inspection and cleaning also matter. Dirt, leaves and other organic debris can retain moisture against the timber if they accumulate for long periods.
Depending on the desired appearance, owners may also choose to clean and recoat Merbau periodically. This can help retain more of its original brown colour while providing additional surface protection.
Alternatively, some owners prefer to allow Merbau to weather naturally into softer grey and brown tones.
Both approaches can produce attractive results, but long service life should never be assumed simply because a timber species is naturally durable. Proper installation, environmental conditions and ongoing care remain important.
Designed for More Than Day 1
It is easy to judge timber only by how it looks when newly installed.
A more meaningful question is:
How will it look after years of use, provided it is properly designed, installed and maintained?
This 20-year-old Merbau furniture from our customer's resort in Cambodia provides a real-world example.
The colour has changed. The surface has weathered. The timber carries clear signs of age.
But it has also developed something that new timber cannot immediately reproduce: history, depth and character.
Day 1 shows the beauty of new Merbau.
Day 7,300 shows what careful use and time can add to it.
