Bangkirai Decking vs Composite: Why Natural Timber Is Better
Choosing decking is about more than price and maintenance. For architects, contractors, distributors and commercial developers, the material also determines how a project looks, feels and ages.
Composite decking is manufactured to resemble wood. Bangkirai decking offers the real material: solid tropical hardwood with natural grain, proven strength and individual character.
What Is Bangkirai Decking?
Bangkirai, also commonly sold as Yellow Balau, is a dense Southeast Asian hardwood from the Shorea group. Its colour ranges from warm yellow-brown to deeper reddish-brown, with natural variations between boards.
This variation is part of its appeal. Every Bangkirai board has its own grain and tone, creating an authentic surface that manufactured decking cannot reproduce exactly.
Its natural density and durability make Bangkirai well suited to terraces, hotels, restaurants, resorts, landscape projects and other demanding outdoor applications.
Natural Character Without Manufactured Repetition
Composite and PVC decking use embossed patterns and selected colours to simulate timber. Although modern products can appear convincing, repeated grain patterns often become noticeable across larger surfaces.
Bangkirai does not need to imitate wood. It is solid wood. Sunlight, weather and use gradually reveal the individual character of each board.
This makes Bangkirai particularly suitable for premium projects where authentic materials contribute to the architectural experience.
A Solid Material That Can Be Restored
Bangkirai is solid timber from surface to core. If it becomes weathered or lightly scratched, it can normally be cleaned, sanded and refinished.
Restoring composite decking can be more restrictive. Sanding may damage its embossed pattern, coloured surface or protective cap. Deeply scratched or heat-damaged boards may need to be replaced rather than restored.
For commercial decks exposed to furniture movement and heavy foot traffic, the ability to repair and refinish the surface provides an important long-term advantage.
Natural Weathering as Part of the Design
When exposed to sunlight, Bangkirai gradually changes from warm brown to an attractive silver-grey. This is a natural weathering process, not necessarily a sign of structural deterioration.
Depending on the required appearance, Bangkirai can be:
- Treated with a suitable decking oil to retain its warmer colour
- Left untreated to develop a natural silver-grey patina
- Cleaned and restored later when the project requires refreshing
Composite decking also changes outdoors, but its fading and wear depend on the manufactured colour and surface layer. Solid timber provides greater flexibility when the appearance needs to be renewed.
Is Composite Really Maintenance-Free?
Composite decking generally requires less refinishing than timber, but it is not maintenance-free. It still requires cleaning, drainage, ventilation and correct installation.
Performance can also vary considerably between manufacturers. A USDA Forest Products Laboratory review found that moisture-related stresses can create microcracks in some wood-plastic composites, potentially exposing their wood component to fungal activity.
Bangkirai also requires proper drainage, ventilation and fixing. The difference is that its strength and durability come from solid hardwood - not a combination of wood particles, plastic and additives.
Responsible Natural Timber
The environmental value of Bangkirai depends on responsible sourcing. Commercial buyers should verify legality, certification and chain-of-custody documentation rather than relying on vague sustainability claims.
The Forest Stewardship Council recommends verifying a supplier’s certificate and ensuring that the correct certification claim appears on invoices and delivery documents.
Sitra Global is FSC-, PEFC- and SVLK-certified, with timber supply chains that comply with EUDR due-diligence and traceability requirements. FSC 100% timber is also available as an additional sourcing option, giving commercial customers greater confidence in the legality, traceability and responsible sourcing of their timber purchases.
Why Choose Natural Bangkirai Decking?
Bangkirai provides qualities that synthetic wood-look products cannot fully replicate:
Genuine grain and natural colour variation
Solid hardwood construction
High density and outdoor durability
A surface that can be cleaned, sanded and refinished
Natural weathering instead of manufactured imitation
Responsible sourcing supported by recognised certification
Composite decking may suit projects where visual uniformity and reduced refinishing are the main priorities. However, when authenticity, material integrity and long-term restoration matter, natural Bangkirai is the stronger choice.
